Our tools recently flagged almost 40% of the activity on one client's website as likely bot traffic. That is an approximate detection signal. It does not mean 40% of Google Analytics visitors were bots or that 40% of advertising spend was wasted.
Some automation is useful. Search engines crawl pages so people can find them, and monitoring tools check whether a site is online. Other automation can scrape pages, hammer forms or create noise in reports. The first job is to tell these groups apart.
Why it matters
If suspicious traffic reaches your analytics or lead forms, it can make a campaign look busier than it really is, lower the apparent conversion rate and fill your lead list with junk. A noisy baseline also makes future advertising harder to judge.
Google Analytics 4 automatically excludes known bots and spiders. A security tool's share of bot-like activity cannot be read as the same share of GA4 sessions. Google Ads separately filters invalid ad interactions and shows an Invalid clicks column. A website bot estimate is not an ad fraud estimate.
A gradual clean-up
- Measure the same period in each tool. Compare security or server traffic with GA4 sessions, lead submissions and Google Ads clicks where relevant. Record the metric behind every percentage.
- Separate useful and suspect automation. Check verified search and monitoring crawlers, busy URLs, request rates and patterns. Avoid blocking on one signal alone.
- Protect problem areas first. Apply a managed challenge or rate limit to suspicious activity on forms, login or heavily scraped pages. Add form validation if junk leads are getting through. Keep necessary integrations working.
- Check the result before tightening. Watch genuine enquiries, search crawling and conversion quality. Adjust rules gradually if real visitors are caught.
- Review ads separately. If you run Google Ads, inspect Invalid clicks and billing adjustments. If you have evidence of unfiltered invalid clicks, Google offers an investigation request for recent activity.
Ven can help review the pattern, plan staged controls around noisy endpoints and check whether reporting and lead quality improve. The aim is a truer picture of real demand, whether you advertise now or later.
