SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation
To the untrained ear, SEO can sound pretty complicated. But in reality? It’s a very straightforward digital marketing weapon.
SEO refers to the process of boosting your search ranking on Google so that your website can – for example – be found on page 1 rather than page 87 (that’s a whopping improvement, FYI).
When implemented correctly, it’s a surefire way of increasing organic (a.k.a unpaid) traffic to your site.
Fact: SEO is not as complex as the digital industry would have you believe.
Imagine a random thought popping into your head, like how hot does it have to be to fry an egg on the sidewalk? (Answer: it’s not actually possible to fry an egg on the sidewalk. That’s because it takes 70*C to fry an egg and the pavement can only reach a maximum temperature of 62*C).
There was a time, pre-internet when we would ponder the thought for a while and either move to a paved desert to figure it out OR just let it go.
But these days, finding the answer is easy. All you have to do is Google it!
And you’ll usually find the answer to your question on the first couple pages of Google.
Google and SEO (because you can’t have one without the other)
Google and SEO are like peanut butter and jelly – they just make sense.
SEO without Google (or any other search engine like Yahoo or Bing) is like people without oxygen – you can’t have one without the other.
SEO is directly related to improving the page number that your website is displayed on in Google. You might type into the search bar the name of your website and not eVen find it on the first 10 – or the first 100 – pages of Google!
And that’s why keywords in SEO are so important.
Keywords. WHAT ARE THOSE?
The process and subsequent success of SEO are achieved through keyword research.
Keyword research enables us to find the words or phrases that relate directly to your product/service.
If you’re in the construction industry, you might have keywords like ‘professional builders’, ‘construction company’ or ‘building services’. Alternatively, if you sell coffee you could expect to have keywords like ‘globally distributed coffee’ or ‘locally sourced coffee beans.
These keywords, when written into every page, post and section of code on your site, will help Google to notice you and deliver your pages to potential customers.
Over a period of 4-6 months, you’ll start to see an increase in traffic flow to your site. And your page number on Google will get you out of the 100s and into the 10s!
SEO & Keyword Implementation
The keyword research and implementation across your site are where things start to get a tad complicated.
As with anything, it is a process that can be learned. But if you don’t have the time or the proper educational tools?
