A shopper is in your store, but they would rather have the purchase delivered locally. Shopify POS Pro now has a native way for staff to create that local delivery order at checkout. Shopify included the feature in POS version 11.16 and highlighted it in its 13 October retail update.
Previously, some teams recorded delivery requests in notes or tags and handed them off manually. Shopify says the new flow uses the same delivery and fulfilment setup merchants manage in Shopify. Staff can add the customer's address, choose Local delivery, record a phone number and instructions, then complete checkout. The order can be prepared and marked delivered from POS.
Who can use it?
This feature is available only to locations on Shopify POS Pro. Local delivery must already be set up in Shopify admin. The option is not a general Shopify checkout change for every store and does not remove the need to define a workable delivery area, fees, staff handoff and fulfilment process.
What to test before staff use it
- Confirm the location has POS Pro and POS v11.16 or later.
- Review the local delivery settings in Shopify admin, including the area served and any minimums or fees that apply to your store.
- Run a test order with a real-world address inside your delivery area. Check that staff can find the customer, select Local delivery, enter instructions and see the resulting order.
- Confirm who packs, dispatches and marks the order delivered. Make sure delivery notifications and staff permissions support that workflow.
For a retailer already offering local delivery, this could reduce manual handoffs when a sale starts in store. If you do not use POS Pro or do not offer local delivery, there is no action to take from this update.
